So, who am I?
I’m Neil L. Rideout, known as the writer of Captain Coder, a technologist, author, and entrepreneur from New Waterford, Nova Scotia, with roots in Newtown, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland. My journey began with a Computer Science degree, where I mastered 12 programming languages across seven platforms. Holding three US patents, including two for multicast videoconferencing, I’ve spent decades pushing technological boundaries. As CEO and CTO of Saratoga Oceanic DGI and Serca Technologies, I led the development of cutting-edge videoconferencing systems and mobile apps, often contracting for the US Defense Intelligence Agency’s DIAMOND program. My recent role as an AI Risk Consultant at Exparx Inc. allowed me to shape ethical AI adoption, crafting governance frameworks and mitigation strategies to ensure safe innovation.
Beyond code, I’m a storyteller. Within the Captain Coder book series, I’ve authored cyberpunk-inspired novels like Code of Invisibility and POLAM, The Birth of Captain Coder, weaving tales of resilience and rebellion. My love for Newfoundland shines in works like Vinland Unearthed, celebrating Norse sagas, and Tides of Change, a coming-of-age story set in Bonavista Bay. Other titles, such as Footpaths and Fjords and Seize the Seas, capture the island’s trails and pirate lore, reflecting my deep connection to its heritage.
A Mensa member since 2002, I hold a Class 7 Drone Operator’s License and a PADI Dive Certificate, blending intellectual rigor with adventure. My 22 Udemy courses in business and logistics sharpen my entrepreneurial edge, while my leadership roles - spanning drone training ventures to managing 50,000-server data centers - showcase my drive to innovate. I mentor aspiring coders and writers, sharing insights through my platform, Book Promotion, Tips and Ideas by Authors. When I’m not coding or writing, I’m exploring Newfoundland’s rugged fjords, fueled by a mission to inspire through technology and narrative. Join me in my worlds of code, fiction, and exploration.
